The philharmonic LA Phil has announced today that it will be cutting 35% of its staff, which includes regular part time layoffs. Wage reductions are also planned. Executive leadership will see their compensation cut by more than 35% as well. Full-time orchestra members will see their compensation reduced to 65% by a renegotiated interim agreement. This is in addition to the weekly minimum wage. However, full-time musicians will continue to receive health care benefits. The Board Chair expressed appreciation for the musicians, staff partners, educators, community partners, and audience.

YOLA

Youth Orchestra Los Angeles is the new initiative from the Los Angeles Philharmonic. These programs are set up in communities where they may not otherwise be able to access the arts. Through YOLA, the Philharmonic hopes to provide music education to a diverse community and to help children learn the basics of conducting an orchestra. These programs, while more intensive, are still very valuable for the community.

LA Phil at Home

LA Phil at Home series offers intimate performances and intimate settings for classical music. Music by composers like Vieuxtemps, Heitor Ville-Lobos and others will be featured at the concert. For example, in "The Jet Whistle," composer Heitor Villa-Lobos sends his flute and cello airborne. Both pieces were composed for solo instruments. They are featured on LA Phil Home. The performers will then perform a virtuoso duet on viola after the intermission.

Salonen's U.S. conductor debut

Esa-Pekka salonen was the U.S. conductor for his debut at the philharmonic. Salonen led the Los Angeles Philharmonic to two subscription concerts. The work was first performed at the Music Center in January 1997. It was also performed again at the Hollywood Bowl and New York in 1998. The work was also performed during a European tour 1998 and January 2000 at UCLA's Royce Hall as part a special Green Umbrella performance. The work was also reprised at the Hollywood Bowl in 2003, and he conducted it prior to his Edinburgh Festival performance.

YOLA at Hollywood Bowl

Youth Orchestra LA is a Los Angeles Philharmonic program that promotes youth development via music. It is modeled after El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that nurtured the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Gustavo Dudamel. El Sistema programs offer free music instruction and musical instruments for children who are not financially secure. Through YOLA, young people can learn to play instruments and make music as a way to express their identity.

Dudamel's departure as Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor

Gustavo Dudamel was a controversial figure within orchestral circles. His departure from the Los Angeles Philharmonic will be a devastating blow to classical music. The Venezuelan-born conductor, who has drawn comparisons to Leonard Bernstein, is a highly talented and charismatic figure. The young conductor was raised in Venezuela by his parents, who ran a network that offered music education and instruments to thousands of children. At the age of 18, he was made director of Venezuela's youth orchestra.

FAQ

How much does Hollywood earn in a single year?

Producing a movie can cost around $100 million. You could make ten movies a month for a decade and still have enough money left to buy a small nation.

You would own your own island, with an airport, a power plant, a bank, a post office, a police force, a fire department, a school system, a hospital, a zoo, a sports stadium, a theater, and a cinema.

If you don't find this to be fun, then you are probably insane.

How many theaters would I need in order to get my money back?

It depends on how long you plan to run your theatrical release.

One theater is sufficient if you intend to screen your film for less time than two weeks.

If your film will run for more that two weeks, at least two theatres are necessary.

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding sites are great because they allow you to reach out directly to potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel that they need someone else to vouch for them.

Because they are still in their infancy, they do not believe that anyone should invest.

Instead, they spend many months working on the project in hopes that someone will notice.

They realize that they did not prepare well when they launch their campaign.

Instead of receiving thousands of dollars, they receive a few donations.
